Allan D'Arcangelo

Biography

Allan D'Arcangelo (1930-1998) is an internationally recognized American Pop artist whose work spanned five decades. His iconic paintings of road signs, highways, and airplane wings defined a Pop treatment of the American landscape. Born in Buffalo, NY and educated at the University of Buffalo, D'Arcangelo later studied in Mexico City, where his first exhibition was held in 1958. His first solo show in New York at the Fischbach Gallery in 1963, "earned Mr. D'Arcangelo a place in the first generation of Pop artists" (New York Times, December 23, 1998). He exhibited regularly at museums and galleries in Europe and New York throughout the 1960's and 70's. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at museums including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He was included in international group exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the IX Bienal de Sao Paolo, Brazil. Starting with the 1964 New York World's Fair, he executed numerous mural commissions, both public and private. D'Arcangelo taught throughout his career, most consistently at the School of Visual Arts and at Brooklyn College, where he was professor emeritus. He was the recipient of a 1987-88 Guggenheim Fellowship, and his works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum, all in New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, among many others.
