Brian McKee’s photographs depict ancient interiors in states of isolation, destruction or rebuilding. The URBANUS series focuses on abandoned cities and communities that McKee photographed using natural light. These once-thriving towns, now deserted, offer an eerie, tranquil view of the deterioration of historic sites.

McKee typically works in trilogies, creating bodies of work with three distinct parts. URBANUS, photographed in India, is the final installment in the Detritus trilogy. The previous installments in the trilogy were Re-build-ings, photographs of re-constructed buildings in Uzbekistan; and Detritus, photographs of the remains of modern buildings in Afghanistan.

Brian McKee, 27, has had solo exhibitions in Vienna, Rome, and throughout Germany. He attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he studied with photographers Stephen Shore and Larry Fink. He currently lives and works in Vienna and New York City. From March 3 – April 6, Hilger Contemporary, Vienna will exhibit Brian McKee: URBANUS, featuring a selection of works from the same series.
