One of Aristide Maillol’s great masterworks, “La Riviere,” resists many conventions of monumental sculpture. Not only does it hug the ground on which it is placed but the defiant twisting of the model’s body allows for an almost breathtaking precariousness barely held in check by the artist’s expert handling of movement and counter-balance.
